I have spent over twenty years collecting and studying
Brownfield stoneware jugs, earthenware plates, porcelain pieces and
majolica. The latter is the most difficult to attribute with
certainty as very few pieces appear to be marked.
Examples are shown below illustrating unmarked pieces dating from the
late 1830s right through the 1840s and 1850s and up to the end of the 1877 potting year (October). Thereafter,
I know of no earthenware or porcelain that is unmarked, with
the exception of majolica.
Providing proof is not an easy matter. In some cases reference to
the 1880 Factory catalogue will provide it immediately. (This is located
in the Spode Mss in Keele University, Staffordshire.) In other cases a
particular printed mark can be found exclusive to the Brownfield
factory. Porcelain items with pattern numbers under approximately
1,800-2,000, will be found unmarked in their original production run:
post 1877 examples of the same items will be marked.
Individual collectors are welcome to send me their
enquiries in those instances where they remain unconvinced! (Please use
the feedback form to contact me.)
