Jugs

Over one hundred and fifty jugs were produced between 1837-1892, mostly relief-moulded.  The remainder used a transfer print, filled in with enamels. A number dating from the 1840s have no factory marks at all.

Any one jug design could be produced in up to sixteen different colour combinations. The most popular Brownfield jug of this period was probably the 'Fern' jug of 1859: this has been found in sixteen different colour combinations, including one in majolica.  Brownfield jugs do not have the high relief of some makers like Meigh, Ridgway & Abington and Alcock, and perhaps need to be enamelled to be seen at their best.

There is only one jug, the 'Mazeppa'  registered in October 1852, that I have not yet seen.  Should you own one of these jugs I would love to hear from you, so please use the feedback form to contact me!
