Figures in porcelain, parian and majolica were introduced
from about October 1871. Many are unmarked, although some have a shape
number which can be checked with the Brownfield 1880 salesman's catalogue.
Identification of some porcelain figures can be facilitated by use of
the Brownfield list of shape numbers, found in the 1880 Factory
Catalogue, kept in the University of Keele Library. Pictures 10 & 11
show two figures recently offered to me as continental, a description
originally made by the auctioneers. Their only marks are an impressed
'59' and '60'. Reference to the Brownfield shape number list reveal that
these are the exact numbers of two Brownfield spill vases.
Collectors should beware very
recent reproductions of genuine Brownfield figures. The 'Cat & Ball' has
appeared in brighter majolica colours, sometimes marked 'Minton'. All
are twentieth or twenty first century imitations, albeit of good
quality. A Brownfield 'cross-legged monkey on a turtle' (Shape '178',
1875) has re-appeared but the monkey's legs are not crossed.
