It is very difficult to estimate the total
number of 'different' patterns introduced by Brownfield for
earthenware and porcelain plates, but it was probably well over five
hundred in the years 1837-1900.Technically the factory introduced
16,400 earthenware and stoneware patterns between 1837-1864 and
another 9,000 approx between 1864-1900. In additions, there were
just over 7,300 porcelain and majolica patterns introduced between
1871-1900. However, a good number were repeats of the same pattern
in a different colour combination. Fascinatingly, the two registered
plate shapes of 10th February 1851 and 2nd October 1854 produced
over fifty different patterns. Several others produced over ten.
One relief moulded jug, the Fern jug of 1859, was manufactured in
sixteen different colour combinations !
Prior to the introduction of porcelain in about
October 1871, plates were made in earthenware, ironstone and
another earthenware body which the factory called 'Ivory'.
